How often have you set unrealistic goals for yourself and become disheartened when you haven’t met them? I’ve done it many times, and every time, I’ve set myself up for a fall with great expectations that have gone far beyond what I’ve been capable of.
It’s all very well thinking that we have unlimited potential (non-physical energy), but we must remember that we have limited amounts of physical energy, time, and effort. We are not superhuman, although we’d like to think we are and some of us behave like it (mentioning no names).
Time and again, burnout blazes into our lives, reminding us that we must balance our human nature with our magical nature if we want to stay sane and healthy. We can channel our energy into making our ideas solid and workable and develop the discipline and foresight to achieve our goals, but we must know our limitations.
We must learn from our experiences and build on them. We must set goals that get us where we intend to go but in smaller, more manageable steps. Then, we can increase the size of those steps as our discipline and confidence grows.
Snail is a wonderful guide for this kind of witch work. As one of nature’s most humble life forms, he teaches that no task is too menial and that all consistent effort eventually reaps the rewards.
